Spanish Republican fighters
enter Paris - World War II 1944
On Tuesday 24th August 2004 Paris will commemorate Liberation Day 1944.
It is only now, that people are beginning to recognise the Spanish Republicans contribution to the victory of WWII.
After the defeat of the legitimate Republican Government of Spain, many Republicans fled
and joined many groups fighting against the fascist Axis powers.  Although information is only now beginning to be made available, the abpve photograph is known to be the Guernica Battallion.
One group saw service alongside the Allies during D-Day.  Others joined the French Resistance (Maquisards)  Others  included The Spanish National Union and the 4th Special Service Company.  Many others also fought and much more will become be known as new information is uncovered.
Let us begin to acknowledge Spanish Republicans contribution to the World War II Allied victory.
