The Exodus
Refugees leaving Spain during the first days of the fall of the Republic. At the French border town of Le Perthus.
From 1936 and 1938, because of the advances made and the growing conquests of territory made by the Franco forces, it produced many exiles into France. Because of the violence which was accompanied by the Nationalists towards the population forced many Spaniards to look for refugee in its neighbouring country; France. The movement of refugees increased drastically with the advances of the the Nationalists of the Northern Campaign during the summer of 1937 and after the occupation of the Aragon during the spring of 1938. Shortly after the capture of the Aragon area numerous militia mixed with civilians began to traverse and seek refugee in France. It is estimated, that the figure of refugees who remained in France at the end of 1938 was more than 40,000, of which the majority, were children. The majority of the children were accommodated in colonies and with families who were sympathetic to the children's plight.

A rather sad photograph showing Spanish refugees leaving Spain, crossing into France with the impending defeat of the democratically elected Spanish Republic which the western governments failed to help. This led to the victory of fascism in Spain.
